Where

Phoenix, AZ - McDowell Mountain Regional Park (North of Fountain Hills)
From central Phoenix, take Loop 202 east to Beeline Highway (SR 87). Continue northeast on SR 87 to Shea Blvd. Travel west on Shea Blvd. to Saguaro Blvd.; turn north. Continue through Town of Fountain Hills to Fountain Hills Blvd; turn right and travel four miles to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park entrance (park entry fee of $5.00). Go 6 miles on McDowell Mountain Park Drive. On race morning there will be signs and event staff directing you where to park. There is a $6.00 daily park fee (per vehicle) at McDowell Mountain Regional Park that is payable at the park entrance.  Map

TriSports.com Desert Classic Duathlon
-3.5 mile run along a smooth desert trail
-21  mile paved road bike course on beautiful rolling hills
-3.0 mile trail run.  Give it all you’ve got for the last push to the finish line.

NEW! Off-Road Mountain Bike Duathlon
-Same beautiful trail runs as the regular duathlon
-15  mile off-road mountain bike course on the competitive track at McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

NEW! 2011 Kids 1 Mile Fun Run
New for 2011 the Kids 1-Mile Fun Run will take place during the regular duathlon so there will be plenty of spectators to cheer on the kids.  Every kid that races will receive on official race shirt and complete for awards in the age-group categories of 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14.

Awards
$4,000 Pro/Elite purse. Elite awards 7 deep
Age group and team awards 3 deep in all categories
Pro-Elite purse for regular duathlon only.  No cash purse for the off-road / mountain bike duathlon.


Divisions
Per USAT rules, the age group of a participant will be determined by age on Dec. 31 of the event year, not by age on race day

-Male and Female:  15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 
                           50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+
-Clydesdale (200 lbs+): 17-39 and 40 and over.
-Athena (150 lbs.+): 17-39 and 40 and over.
-Male Relay, Female Relay and Mixed Relay teams.
Relay team members may not race individual as well.

Off-ROAD MOUNTAIN BIKE DUATHLON
-Male and Female:  15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 
                           50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+
-Clydesdale (200 lbs+): 17-39 and 40 and over.

A USAT Sanctioned Event
USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the sports of triathlon, duathlon, winter triathlon and aquathlon in the United States. Participation in a USAT sanctioned event means the event director has the proper permits in place, liability and athlete excess medical insurance coverage and the event plan has met the standard of organization required. USA Triathlon provides rules, guidance and governance to set the standard for safe and fair multi-sport races.

Join the Phoenix Triathlon Club at McDowell Mountain Regional Park for a workout that will include running both of the run courses followed by a bike ride on the duathlon bike course.  Race director will be on had to answer questions about the race, transition area and the course.  Meet at the race transition area / North Trail.  Map There is a $6 park entry fee per vehicle.

Volunteer
The TriSports.com Desert Classic Duthlon has become one of the valley's favorite multi-sport events, in large part, because of the great volunteers that help put on the race.   

Volunteers are needed on race day Sunday February 20, 2011 from  6am-noon.  Volunteer jobs include: man aid stations, direct traffic, point athletes in the right direction, parking, body marking, transition area, etc.  It's fun, rewarding and motivating!

Raffle

Prizes raffled at post race ceremony. Each entry into the race receives one free ticket (in your goody bag).  Additional raffle tickets may also be purchased for $1 apiece or 6 for $5. You may purchase additional tickets at packet pickup on Saturday or at the park on race day.  Proceeds from the raffle are used for youth education programs in the Maricopa County Parks and for PTC programs and activities.

Race Numbers
You will receive an wrist band, race bib, helmet number and bike number at packet pick-up on Satruday before the race.  Wrist bands are for your safety and security and MUST be worn at all times.  A volunteer will fit you with your wrist band at packet pickkup.  Wear you race bib number on the front of your shirt of shorts. Your number must be visible to checkpoint recorders at all times.  You will also recieve a bike number and helmet number.  The bike number must be affixed to your bike.  The bike helmet number must be affixed to the front of your bike helmet. You may not be scored at the finish line unless your number is visible when you cross the finish line. Participant numbers cannot be transferred or exchanged as they are assigned to specific age/sex categories.

Chip Timing
NOTE: Timing chips will be distributed on race morning at the race venue. 
You MUST have your race bib in hand to receive a timing chip on race morning.
No race bib -  No chip.

Timing chips will only be distributed on race morning at the expo area near the finish line.  Attach the timing chip to your ankle with the provided strap.  Your time will not be recorded unless your timing chip is attached when you cross the finish line. 

Your timing chip will be detached by race personnel at the end of the race and must not be removed by any participant prior to the finish.  Participants must not RE-CROSS the finish line for any reason after competing the race. This will trigger the reading of an erroneous time. Start in your assigned wave or risk not being scored.  Participant numbers and/or timing chips cannot be transferred or exchanged as they are assigned to specific age/sex categories.  Participants who do not return their timing chip will be charged $85.00.

Relay teams will be issued one timing chip per team.  Relay teams must hand off the timing chip and strap before exiting the transition area.

Aid station details
Aid stations will be stocked with water and Gatorade.
Run #1 (3.5 Miles): Aid Station about halfway through the run. (Water Only)
Bike (21 Miles):    No Aid Station
Transition Area:  Aid Station immediately after exiting T2 (Water & Gatorade)
Run #2 (3 Miles): Aid Station about halfway through the run. (Water & Gatorade)

Rules
Duathlon is an individual event and it is the athlete's responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid penalties. The TriSports.com Desert Classic Duathlon is a USAT sanctioned, non drafting event.  USAT officials will be on the course to enforce the USAT competitive rule set.  The official's ruling is final in the case of Position Violations and there are no protests or appeals. 

Bike helmets are mandatory. You will not be allowed out of the transition area with out a helmet.  ANSI approved cycling helmet must be fastened before mounting bike and worn through entire bike course. The bike course is open to light vehicular traffic. Obey all traffic laws, police, and park officials on the course. 

For the safety of yourself and the other participants I-pods, mp3 players, walkmans, radios or any other musical devices are strictly prohibited and may be grounds for disqualification.

Medical
Respiratory/Asthma - If you have a history of breathing difficulties or experience wheezing when exposed to certain allergens, please consult your physician about possible preventative measures.

Special Conditions - If you have unique medical concerns (allergies, unusual or chronic medical problems, etc.), bring those to the attention of the race staff.  If you have a Medical Alert badge, please wear it.


Delay of Race / Race Cancellation
In the unlikely event the race is delayed due to adverse weather conditions, the starting time of the event will be moved back accordingly at the discretion of the race director. The race will not be delayed longer than one hour. If the delay is longer than one hour the race will be canceled. The race director has the authority to cancel the race. If cancellation of the race is initiated at any time, please follow instructions of race officials and local law enforcement personnel. Your entry fee is not refundable if the event is canceled.
